Fred Bonilla literally “fell” into starting his own business in 1979 – when a crooked swimming pool contractor absconded with $8,000, leaving a big hole in the backyard of Bonilla’s new home. Bonilla finished the project himself, others took notice, and before he knew it he was building custom pools and spas all over San Antonio.

In 2000, he decided to expand his business to a new six-acre location on Loop 1604, a project that required more than $1 million in capital. After visiting one of the city’s largest banks and being turned down for a loan, he learned about the South Texas Business Fund. In partnership with Jefferson State Bank, the STBF was able to work an SBA 504 loan at a low interest rate – and one of the city’s best-known pool and spa companies had a beautiful new showroom and a new lease on life.

Aqueous World of Water and Spa Crafters now employs 21 people and is the authorized South Texas distributor for Jacuzzi Bath Projects and Jacuzzi Premium Spas. The company offers everything from custom-built pools, fountains, spas and waterfalls to upscale faucets, sinks, toilets and baths, as well as remodeling and interior decorating services. Bonilla is fast outgrowing his present building and looks to expand further on his acreage in the next few years.
